Our Review Methodology
Every tool on FreelancePick is evaluated using a consistent, criteria-based framework focused on the needs of freelancers and self-employed professionals — not enterprise users.
Scoring Criteria
Ease of Use
20%How intuitive is the tool for non-accountants? Can a freelancer get started without a tutorial? We evaluate onboarding, UI clarity, and learning curve.
Features
25%Does the tool include the features freelancers actually need? We prioritize invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, and reporting.
Freelancer-Specific Functionality
25%Schedule C support, 1099 handling, quarterly tax estimates, mileage tracking, and self-employment tax calculations. This is where most tools designed for businesses fall short.
Value for Money
20%Is the pricing fair for a solo operator? We factor in whether the tool charges per user, per feature, or has hidden fees that affect freelancers disproportionately.
Customer Support
10%Can you get help when you need it? We evaluate response times, support channels (chat, phone, email), and the quality of documentation.
How We Research
Our review process includes hands-on testing of free trials, analysis of pricing pages and changelogs, review of customer feedback across multiple platforms, and consultation of public documentation.
All reviews are updated at least annually. When a tool makes a significant pricing or feature change, we update the review within 30 days.
Editorial Independence
FreelancePick accepts affiliate commissions but these relationships do not influence our scores, rankings, or editorial conclusions. We have declined to promote tools that we believe are not good fits for freelancers, even when those tools offered commissions. Our scores are determined by our methodology, not by commercial relationships.
